Weathering is an experimental sculpture that looks at the formation of the artist’s cultural identity through the subtle yet enduring effects of erosion and deposition upon the racialised body. The work explores the culminating effects of racialised experiences that impact one’s sense of self-determination, through processes of both degradation and distortion. The paper 3D printed face gradually deforms as the drip system periodically releases a solution of vinegar and water which causes the form to bloat and disfigure. The artist’s noticeably Chinese facial features elongate and diminish as the face absorbs the liquid solution. The visible disintegration of the face is gradual and irreversible as a new hybrid identity is generated through the enduring process of weathering.
